Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Intravenous sedation in dentistry is recommended for patients who feel anxious or require more complex dental procedures.

A sedation-trained dentist or anaesthetist administers intravenous sedatives to help you feel relaxed at the start of your appointment.

This safe and widely used technique helps avoid the need for a general anaesthetic in many cases. We provide light to moderate (advanced) sedation, allowing you to stay calm and responsive to instructions during treatment, making it easier for your dentist to work effectively.

Additionally, sedation has a strong amnesic effect, so most patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards.

Is IV sedation right for me?

Phobias and anxiety related to dental treatment are extremely common. People who feel anxious are more likely to avoid dental visits, which can lead to poorer oral health over time. If the thought of visiting the dentist makes you feel fearful or uncomfortable, our sedation services are designed to help you.

You may benefit from dental sedation if you:

  • Have a phobia, anxiety, or are very nervous about dental treatment
  • Have had a negative dental experience in the past that makes returning difficult
  • Have a strong or sensitive gag reflex
  • Are undergoing a long or complex surgical procedure
  • Prefer not to be fully aware during the procedure
  • Are afraid of local anaesthetic injections in the mouth
  • Suffer from jaw joint problems and find it hard to keep your mouth open for extended periods
  • Have medical or behavioural conditions that make routine dentistry challenging

SEDATION techniques

At Dental Sedation Solutions, we understand that every patient is unique, which is why we offer a range of sedation and anxiety management techniques tailored to individual needs. The following options are available:

  • Hypnotherapy and relaxation techniques – Provided online by our Clinical Hypnotherapist to help prepare you ahead of your dental visit and equip you with coping tools to manage treatment without sedation.
  • Pre-medication – A light sedative tablet to help ease mild dental anxiety.
  • Inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) – Also known as “happy air,” this is suitable for both adults and children.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation – A single-drug technique using midazolam to help you feel deeply relaxed during treatment.
  • Oral and transmucosal (intranasal) sedation – Using midazolam for patients with severe needle phobia or sensory sensitivities, including those with Autism.
  • Advanced IV sedation – A combination of sedative drugs administered by a consultant anaesthetist to achieve a deeper level of sedation, ideal for complex procedures or patients with additional needs.
  • General anaesthetic – Please note: this is not provided in-house, but we can refer you to a trusted external provider if necessary.

Dr Sanjeev Bhanderi Endo61.

Single drug intravenous (IV) sedation involves the use of one sedative medication called midazolam, which belongs to the benzodiazepine group of drugs. Midazolam is the most commonly recommended sedative for IV use in the UK due to its safety, effectiveness, and calming effects. It induces a deep sense of relaxation and reduces anxiety, making dental treatment more comfortable. While you may feel very drowsy and even drift in and out of light sleep, this type of sedation does not cause full unconsciousness like a general anaesthetic. Recovery is typically smooth and relatively quick.

  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Periodontal (gum) treatment
  • Simple tooth extractions
  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Oral surgery (including dental implants)
  • Crown and bridge work
  • Multiple treatments in one session (to reduce the number of visits)

In some cases, a patient’s clinical needs may not be fully met with standard IV sedation using midazolam alone. In these situations, we may consider using an advanced sedation technique, but only when absolutely necessary and clinically appropriate.

Advanced sedation is carried out exclusively by our consultant anaesthetists, who are specially trained in combining sedative drugs to achieve a deeper level of sedation. This approach is typically reserved for patients undergoing complex procedures or those with specific medical or behavioural needs.

We ensure that the appropriate facilities, training, and emergency protocols are in place for the safe delivery of advanced sedation. All members of our dental sedation team are experienced and specifically trained in managing advanced techniques and responding promptly to any sedation-related complications.

Advanced sedation is typically used for patients who require a deeper level of sedation than standard techniques can provide. It is most often recommended for:

  • Complex or lengthy dental procedures
  • Implant surgery
  • Patients with high levels of dental anxiety or phobia
  • Situations where standard sedation has proven ineffective or inappropriate

Advanced sedation allows treatment to be carried out safely and comfortably, while the patient remains responsive but deeply relaxed. This type of sedation is administered only by a consultant anaesthetist.

I'm worried about cannulation

Cannula

We understand that cannulation can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re anxious about needles. For simple IV sedation, we use small paediatric cannulas to make this part of the process as gentle and unnoticeable as possible.

At your assessment visit, we’ll discuss any concerns you may have. If needed, we can provide premedication and/or EMLA cream (a local anaesthetic cream) to apply to your hand or arm before your appointment, helping to make the cannulation process pain-free.

For advanced sedation techniques, a slightly larger cannula is required. If you would like EMLA cream for this, just let us know, and we’ll be happy to provide it.

Our team of experienced Sedationists and Anaesthetists are committed to ensuring you feel calm, comfortable, and well-supported throughout your procedure.

What Next?

If you are interested in having your dental treatment under sedation, please speak to your dental care provider and ask your dentist to send us a referral.

Once we receive the referral, we will liaise directly with your dentist to review your treatment needs and arrange a face-to-face pre-operative sedation assessment.

Don’t forget — we come to you. All of our services are provided safely and conveniently in-house at your chosen dental practice.

If you don't have a dentist to refer you contact Victoria Dental Clinic in Manchester or The Edge Dental in Cheshire to book a consultation with Dr Shilpa Shah, who will discuss your treatment needs and sedation options.
