Special care dentistry for children

We regularly care for children who:

• Are autistic or otherwise neurodivergent
• Have sensory processing differences

• Experience anxiety or fear around dental visits
• Have complex health or communication needs

We understand how important it is to reduce stress and sensory overload. Our team takes time to understand each child’s preferences and offers:

• Advice on pre-visit preparation activities
• Flexible appointment lengths
• Adjusted lighting or sound where possible
• A quiet, supportive atmosphere

When necessary, we offer:

• Inhalation sedation
• Oral and intranasal sedation
• Anaesthetic-led IV sedation, for higher levels of anxiety or complex needs (by our Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Justin Roberts)

These options are delivered safely and help your child remain relaxed and comfortable during treatment.

The Wand STA (Single Tooth Anaesthesia) system is often used for children in special care dentistry because it delivers local anaesthetic slowly and precisely, reducing discomfort and anxiety. Its pen-like design is less intimidating than traditional syringes, making it especially helpful for children with dental phobia, autism, or sensory processing difficulties. • Work with education or healthcare professionals when needed

We offer fully wheelchair-accessible treatment rooms, including generously sized surgeries, waiting areas and facilities and designed to accommodate patients with limited mobility. We allow extended appointments when needed and adjust the environment to support comfort and calm.
