Needle Phobic?

Introducing The Wand®

How does the wand® work?

We want your child’s experience of dental treatment in our clinic to be as comfortable as possible, which is why we are proud to use The Wand® for local anaesthesia for both children and adults.

The Wand® is ideal for treating children. It’s a pain-free alternative to the traditional dental injection and uses a computerised system to deliver precise local anaesthetic without the pain and anxiety associated with a dental needle, or the discomfort caused by extensive numbing.

Traditionally, local anaesthetic is administered with a needle and syringe, numbing an entire side of the face, which not only makes it difficult to speak and eat after treatment, but can also cause post-operative trauma, as children may accidentally bite their lips or cheeks. The Wand® changes all that by using a computerised, sensor-controlled probe that numbs only the tooth being treated. This technique is known as STA, or Single Tooth Anaesthesia.

is the wand® just for children?

We offer The Wand® for both children and adults as part of our in-house sedation service at Victoria Clinic. Simply ask during your consultation, and it can be included in your treatment plan.

why we use the wand®

It eliminates the need for a traditional needle.
The Wand® removes the anxiety often associated with dental injections.

It’s incredibly precise.
The Wand’s precision control makes the numbing process more comfortable overall, as it only numbs the tooth being treated. With The Wand®, children won’t experience numbness across the face as they might with traditional anaesthetics, reducing the risk of accidentally biting their lips or cheeks.

It works instantly.
There’s no need to wait for the anaesthetic to take effect. The Wand® allows your dentist to begin treatment right away, helping complete your child’s appointment more efficiently.

It’s the flow, not the needle.
The main source of discomfort during traditional injections isn’t the needle itself, but the flow of anaesthetic into the gum tissue. The Wand® delivers the anaesthetic at an optimal, computer-controlled flow rate through its handpiece, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience. This creates a gentle pathway of anaesthesia, so patients hardly feel a thing.

Clinically Proven Benefits in Paediatric Dentistry

The effectiveness of this anaesthetic method has been confirmed by multiple clinical studies conducted in paediatric departments across universities in the USA and Europe. These studies highlight several key advantages, including:

  • Absence of pain, due to injection speeds being below the patient’s pain threshold
  • Reduced dosage of anaesthetic solution required
  • No damage to developing permanent tooth crowns beneath baby teeth
  • No residual numbness in the lips, tongue, or cheeks — eliminating the risk of accidental biting or temporary changes in facial expression
