Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is a safe, widely used technique designed for patients who experience dental anxiety or require more complex procedures. Administered by a sedation-trained dentist or consultant anaesthetist, IV sedatives help you feel deeply relaxed before and during your treatment, avoiding the need for a general anaesthetic in most cases.

We provide light-to moderate (advanced) sedation. You will remain safe, calm, and able to respond to instructions, allowing your dentist to work effectively while you stay completely at ease. Additionally, IV sedation has a strong amnesic effect, meaning most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterwards.

Sedation & Dental Treatment

Dental treatment and sedation provided by Dr Shilpa Shah at Victoria Clinic, Manchester, for patients without a regular dentist or patients who wish to self-refer.

Tailored Care

Bespoke sedation treatment plans to ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible. We use EMLA cream (local anaesthetic) to ensure cannula insertion is completely painless.

Mobile Sedation

In some instances, we provide sedation services for our colleagues in their own clinics, providing specialist serices on-site.

Dental phobias and anxiety are extremely common and often lead people to delay or avoid dental visits. Our sedation services are designed to help you regain control of your oral health in complete comfort.

You may benefit from dental sedation if you:

  • Suffer from dental phobia, severe anxiety, or nervousness about treatment
  • Have had a negative dental experience in the past that makes returning difficult
  • Have a strong or sensitive gag reflex
  • Are undergoing a long or complex surgical procedure
  • Prefer not to be fully aware during the procedure
  • Are afraid of local anaesthetic injections in the mouth
  • Suffer from jaw joint problems (TMJ/bruxism) and find it hard to keep your mouth open for extended periods
  • Have medical or behavioural conditions that make routine dentistry challenging

  • Intravenous (IV) Sedation: A single-drug technique using Midazolam.
  • Oral & Transmucosal (Intranasal) Sedation: Uses Midazolam for patients with severe needle phobia or sensory sensitivities, including Autism.
  • Advanced IV Sedation: A combination of sedative drugs administered by a consultant anaesthetist during complex cases.

Yes, absolutely. We specialise in treating needle-phobic patients and take extra care to make the process completely stress-free. We use numbing cream (EMLA) so you won't feel a thing, ultra-fine cannulas, and can even offer pre-medication tablets or needle-free options like inhalation sedation in conjunction with IV sedation to help you feel relaxed before we begin. Single drug intravenous (IV) sedation involves the use of one sedative medication called midazolam, which belongs to the benzodiazepine group of drugs. Midazolam is the most commonly recommended sedative for IV use in the UK due to its safety, effectiveness, and calming effects. It induces a deep sense of relaxation and reduces anxiety, making dental treatment more comfortable. While you may feel very drowsy and even drift in and out of light sleep, this type of sedation does not cause full unconsciousness like a general anaesthetic. Recovery is typically smooth and relatively quick.

  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Periodontal (gum) treatment
  • Simple tooth extractions
  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Oral surgery (including dental implants)
  • Crown and bridge work
  • Multiple treatments in one session (to reduce the number of visits)

In some cases, a patient’s clinical needs may not be fully met with standard IV sedation using midazolam alone. In these situations, we may consider using an advanced sedation technique, but only when absolutely necessary and clinically appropriate.

Advanced sedation is carried out exclusively by our consultant anaesthetists, who are specially trained in combining sedative drugs to achieve a deeper level of sedation. This approach is typically reserved for patients undergoing complex procedures or those with specific medical or behavioural needs.

We ensure that the appropriate facilities, training, and emergency protocols are in place for the safe delivery of advanced sedation. All members of our dental sedation team are experienced and specifically trained in managing advanced techniques and responding promptly to any sedation-related complications.

Advanced sedation is typically used for patients who require a deeper level of sedation than standard techniques can provide. It is most often recommended for:

  • Complex or lengthy dental procedures
  • Implant surgery
  • Patients with high levels of dental anxiety or phobia
  • Situations where standard sedation has proven ineffective or inappropriate

Advanced sedation allows treatment to be carried out safely and comfortably, while the patient remains responsive but deeply relaxed. This type of sedation is administered only by a consultant anaesthetist.

Thinking of Dental Implants?

Dental implant surgery is an excellent, long-lasting way to replace missing teeth, but the idea of oral surgery can feel daunting. With IV sedation, your treatment is completely comfortable, pain-free, and stress-free—with virtually no memory of the procedure afterwards.

I'm worried about cannulation

Cannula

We understand that cannulation can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re anxious about needles. For simple IV sedation, we use small paediatric cannulas to make this part of the process as gentle and unnoticeable as possible.

At your assessment visit, we’ll discuss any concerns you may have. If needed, we can provide premedication and/or EMLA cream (a local anaesthetic cream) to apply to your hand or arm before your appointment, helping to make the cannulation process pain-free.

For advanced sedation techniques, a slightly larger cannula is required. If you would like EMLA cream for this, just let us know, and we’ll be happy to provide it.

Our team of experienced Sedationists and Anaesthetists are committed to ensuring you feel calm, comfortable, and well-supported throughout your procedure.
