Inhalation Sedation

If dental visits make you feel anxious, inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) offers a simple, light-touch solution to help you feel at ease without the heavy lingering recovery of oral or IV sedatives.

  • How it works: You’ll breathe a mild blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose mask.
  • How it feels: Within minutes, anxiety gives way to a pleasant sense of warmth, light physical tingling, and calm relaxation. You stay conscious, comfortable, and in full control the entire time.
  • Fast recovery: As soon as the procedure ends, the gas is cleared from your system with pure oxygen.

Treatment Under Sedation

Inhalation sedation provides a calm, pressure-free environment for a wide range of dental procedures. We routinely perform the following under inhalation sedation:

  • Routine Fillings
  • Root Canal Treatments
  • Simple & Complex Extractions
  • Hygiene Cleanings & Routine Blood Tests

Who Is It Ideal For?

  • Adults with mild-to-moderate dental anxiety
  • Patients with a sensitive gag reflex
  • Individuals with needle phobia or low pain thresholds
  • Patients needing short, simple, or multi-step procedures completed in comfort

When Is It Not Recommended?

For your safety, inhalation sedation may not be suitable if you have:

  • Inability to breathe through your nose (severe nasal congestion or colds)
  • Severe claustrophobia or difficulty wearing a nosepiece
  • Pregnancy or current breastfeeding
  • Severe respiratory conditions (such as COPD)
  • Recent facial, nasal, or inner ear surgery
  • Very low blood pressure

If inhalation sedation isn't suitable, our team will discuss alternative comfort options with you during your assessment.

What to expect and aftercare

1. Before Your Appointment

  • You’ll attend an initial assessment where we evaluate your medical history and tailor your care plan.
  • You can eat a light meal up to 2 hours before your appointment.
  • Practice breathing in and out through your nose so you feel comfortable with the nosepiece.
  • Feel free to bring your headphones and a playlist to listen to your favorite music during treatment.

2. During the Procedure

  • Application: A small, comfortable mask is fitted over your nose. You'll breathe naturally.
  • Sensation: Within 3–5 minutes, you’ll experience a pleasant feeling of warmth, slight tingling in your hands or feet, and a deep sense of physical calm.
  • Monitoring: Our team will continuously monitor you, talk you through each step, and ensure you feel completely relaxed.

3. Recovery & Aftercare

  • Clearing the Sedative: Once treatment concludes, we switch the system to 100% pure oxygen for 2–5 minutes. This flushes the gas out of your system entirely.
  • Immediate Discharge: You will feel completely alert within 10–15 minutes.
  • Driving & Work: You can safely leave the practice on your own, drive home (after a short 20-minute waiting period), and return straight to your normal daily tasks
